Glucosamine
Glucosamine is an aminosaccharide and is naturally produced by the human body. It inhibits the breakdown of proteoglycans, which constitute a major part of cartilage (glycosaminoglycans). Glycosaminoglycans when attached to a protein core are called proteoglycan.
Many studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of glucosamine for treating arthritis [1]. Generally results are obtained in 6 to 8 weeks of treatment. Pain relief, increased mobility and reduction of inflammation have been reported 1. Compared to ibuprofen, glucosamine acts more slowly in relief of pain, however, glucosamine sulphate produces greater alleviation of pain after a 6- 8 week treatment period than ibuprofen. The course of treatment should last 6-8 weeks. After cessation of treatment, symptoms occur in 6 –12 weeks. A new course of treatment can then be re-instituted.
Chondroitin
Chondroitin is a disaccharide formed of N-acetylgalactosamine and glucoronic acid. Chondroitin has been found to stimulate chondrocytic activity and result in the formation of new collagen and proteoglycans and also to inhibit the breakdown of proteoglycans. The form of chondroitin is important, since some of the forms are not absorbed. In fact in some preparations, what is labelled as chondroitin sulfate is actually long-chain glycoaminoglycans. Good results have been reported in French and Italian studies. It was found that chondroitin sulfate could protect against cartilage damage and reduction in the amount of NSAID’s taken.
